The Soundtrack of My Lunch

By Josh

I'll have a Wreck on Wheat, no mayo.A few months ago, the Beachwood Reporter had a great breakdown of the live music that gets played at Potbelly sandwich shops here in Chicago. In a nutshell, it’s acoustic folk ballad versions of VH1 hits (In a word: awesome!). My recent fav has been one dude who plays the song “Jumper” by Third Eye Blind (who knew an acoustic guitar and a single voice could move a room to tears..) Yesterday, as I was sifting through random material on Odeo, I came upon a real gem that belongs in the rotation: an acoustic version of Outkast’s “Hey Ya”. (Click here to listen. UPDATE: Video now available on YouTube UPDATE2: Video taken down…) It’s hard to believe it was just a mere 2 years ago we were collectively shaking it like a Polaroid picture at every wedding, bar mitzvah, and prom we could get our hands on. Oh, you say you want to play at Potbelly’s? Here you go. Just promise me you’ll play “Skulls” by the Misfits.

The corpses all hang headless and limp
Bodies with no surprises
And the blood drains down like devils rain
We’ll bathe tonight

I want your skulls
I need your skulls

Oh wait – somebody already beat you to it.

A few weeks back, I wanted to do “Jumper” at karaoke. But either they didn’t have it, or someone beat me to it, or…who knows? Anyway, I did “Push” by Matchbox 20 instead. And some Dookie-school Green Day. And loads of other crap. But forget playing at Potbelly. I’m totally gonna start serenading you over the wall. Better than Ezra?

Gabby loves Dookie! You can sing whatever you want to me, as long as it’s not from a Broadway musical.

Thanks for noticing the Potbelly story, by our fine contributor Scott Gordon. Also, thanks to the Onion for permission to republish a version of the story – it originally appeared in the Chicago print version of the Onion, but never online. Also, you should add The Beachwood Reporter to your blogroll!

(I also want to know if it’s even remotely possible that a song with corpses and skulls doesn’t rock.)

Steve, thanks for giving credit where credit is due on the Potbelly post. And I agree, Beachwood belongs on my roll. So it shall be! Keep up the great work. Love Chicago-opoly!

[...] while driving in the Valley I first heard Hey Ya back in 03  on Garth Trinidad’s Chocolate City on KCRW while driving through Chatsworth.  Josh Andrews recently noted that “it’s hard to believe it was just a mere 2 years ago we were collectively shaking it like a Polaroid picture at every wedding, bar mitzvah, and prom we could get our hands on.” [...]
